Murder trial hears harrowing 999 call as grandad tries to save Mansfield teen stabbed through the heart

​Jonathan Treadgold, 18, of Kent Close, Worksop, was convicted of​ the murder of 18-year-old Liam Gray following a trial at Nottingham Crown​ Court.

Following his conviction Nottinghamshire Police has released harrowing audio​ footage of the 999 call made by Liam’s granddad after his grandson had been​ stabbed by Treadgold which can be heard by playing our video clip.

Liam’s granddad, who witnessed the assault, provided first aid as he desperately​ tried to save him.

CCTV footage also shows Liam’s and Treadgold’s movements before the stabbing,including them both in a shop, as well as footage of Treadgold running ​ from the​ scene following the stabbing.

On the afternoon of 1 August 2019 Nottinghamshire Police officers were called to a​ house on Gladstone Street, Mansfield, following a report of a stabbing inside.

Paramedics treated Liam before he was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical​ Centre where he died a short time later from a single stab wound to his chest.

Earlier that afternoon Liam had met up with Treadgold and another man at a house​ on Gladstone Street.

They walked to a local shop to buy alcohol before returning to the house. They were​ drinking in the garden and later made their way to a local pub.

Treadgold returned to the Gladstone Street address separately, followed by Liam​ and the other man.

A short time later Treadgold came out of the back door and told a man that he’d​ stabbed Liam before he ran off.

The man went back inside into the kitchen and saw a large knife on the floor with​ blood on it.

He then went into the dining room where he saw Liam standing behind a sofa and​ holding a tea towel to his chest, with blood on his white T-shirt. Liam asked him to​ call an ambulance.

The court heard that Treadgold later turned up at an address in Mansfield, where his​ mum was visiting a friend, and he told them he’d stabbed and killed Liam.Speaking after Treadgold was convicted of murder today, Detective Chief Inspector​ Kevin Broadhead said: “This is an incredibly tragic case which saw a young man​ lose his life as a result of a single stab wound.

“Liam’s family has understandably been left devastated by his death and the​ thoughts of the entire investigation team remain with them at this difficult time.”

Assistant Chief Constable Kate Meynell, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “Our​ thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Liam’s family and friends for their loss.

“This tragic case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of knife crime.​ “While we’ve seen a significant decrease in knife crime in Nottinghamshire, bucking​ the national trend, Nottinghamshire Police remains committed to tackling this serious​ issue and bringing knife crime offenders to justice.”

Treadgold is due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing ​on February 10.
